How does the case drop system work in 2026?
Cases in CS2 drop once a week within the Weekly Care Package system, under the condition of possessing Prime status. To receive a drop, a player must earn 5000 experience points and advance to the next profile level. At the moment of advancement, a panel with four rewards is displayed, from which one can choose two.
Usually, one of these rewards is a case from the called Active Drop Pool. Currently, the chance of receiving a case from this pool is 99%. There exists about a 1% chance for a so-called Rare Drop. In such a case, the system offers a case withdrawn from circulation. Hitting such an item is an immediate profit in the range of several hundred dollars.
How much do keys cost and what are your chances?
To open a case, you need a key. Its price in the game menu is fixed and amounts to 2.50 USD. Remember to never buy keys on the Steam Market from other players – they are several times more expensive there (even 12-18 USD), because they serve mainly collector or investment purposes, and not the opening of containers itself.
Chance for a drop (Valve Statistics)
Valve officially confirms the chances for individual rarities of items. They look as follows:

- Classified (Pink): 3.2% – 1 out of 31 cases.
- Covert (Red): 0.64% – 1 out of 156 cases.
- Rare Special (Knives/Gloves): 0.26% – on average 1 out of 385 cases.
This means that the average cost of “dropping” a knife is opening almost 400 cases, which at the price of the key and the case itself gives an amount in the range of 1,400 – 1,600 USD. Most knives on the market are worth significantly less, which makes opening cases not profitable in the long term.
