Steam Fee is a mandatory charge collected by Valve from every sale of an item on the Community Market, which in the case of the game Counter-Strike 2 amounts to a total of 15%. These funds are automatically deducted from the amount paid by the buyer, which means that the seller receives an amount reduced by the fee into their Steam Wallet.
Fee components: Where does your money go?
The total fee on items from CS2 consists of two separate charges: the Steam fee and the game publisher specific fee. Although for the end user this is a single cost, the settlement algorithm separates these amounts in the following way:
- Steam Fee: amounts to 5% and is collected by Valve for maintaining the server infrastructure and transaction processing.
- CS2 Fee: amounts to 10% and goes to the game publisher (in this case also Valve) as a licensing cost.
How much will I realistically get for a sold skin?
When selling a skin in CS2, you will receive exactly 86.95% of the amount the buyer pays, due to the specific way of rounding fee components (1 / 1.15). In simplification: if you list a skin so that the buyer pays 115 PLN, you will receive 100 PLN.
The minimum charge for each part of the fee is always 0.01 USD. This means that when selling very cheap items (e.g., cases for a few cents), the percentage fee can be significantly higher than the standard 15%.
How does the currency converter on the Community Market work?
While listing an item, the system automatically converts amounts between the seller’s currency and the buyer’s currency based on the current market exchange rate. If you sell a skin for PLN, and a user paying in USD buys it, Valve collects the fee based on the value in the seller’s regional currency, which eliminates the risk of losses on the currency spread on the user’s side.
How does Steam earn from the circulation of skins?
The Steam business model is based on creating a “closed circulation of money,” in which every transaction generates pure profit for Valve without the flow of goods. Thanks to this mechanism, the same AWP skin can be sold ten times, and each time the platform will collect a 15% fee from it.
Why does Valve use a fee system?
- Secondary market monetization: In traditional games, the publisher earns only once (upon purchase of the game). In CS2, Valve earns with every change of an item’s owner.
- Maintenance of the economy: The fee acts as a “money sink” – it removes excess cash from circulation in the Steam Wallet, which prevents rapid inflation of the prices of virtual items.
- Financing the ecosystem: Funds from the charges cover the costs of game development, servers, and prize pools in Major-type tournaments.
Is it possible to avoid the Steam fee?
Avoiding the fee on the official Steam Community Market is impossible, because the system automatically adds the charges to every offer. Players looking for savings often use external marketplaces, which offer significantly lower fees, usually in the range of 2% to 12%. What are the sales limits on the Steam Market?
Every user must remember the balance limit in the Steam Wallet, which is approximately 2000 USD (this value fluctuates depending on the currency). If you list a very rare knife or gloves whose price with the fee exceeds this limit, the system will not allow the transaction to be finalized. In such cases, players most often decide on a barter exchange (trade) or sale on external platforms such as SellYourSkins.
